Professor Ray Raymond is a Fellow of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in New York and of the Royal Society of Arts in London. A British diplomat for many years, he now teaches Government, International Relations and History at the State University of New York and Adjunct Professor of Comparative Politics and International Relations at the US Military Academy.

Professor Raymond spent over 20 years in Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service as a chancery/political officer and policy analyst.  From 1997 to 2005, he also advised then British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Chief of Staff on US politics and public policy. In recognition of his  work, he was honored by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Professor Raymond was educated at University College Dublin with First Class Honours in Modern History and Politics, and received his Ph.D at the University of Kansas. He later attended Yale University as an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow.  Professor Raymond has  written  articles in professional journals covering the history of US foreign policy towards the United Kingdom, ethnic nationalism, terrorism and the United Nations. He is a recognized expert on the American Revolution, on the history of the Purple Heart, and is currently writing a biography of John Jay, one of the negotiators of the Treaty of Paris of 1783

Professor Raymond is Co-Producer of the forthcoming PBS Documentary “American General,” a reassessment of Benedict Arnold’s military contribution to the American victory in the Revolutionary War.

PUBLIC SERVICE AWARDS

  • Outstanding Civilian Service Medal 2006, US Department of the Army,
  • Invested with the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, by HM The Queen, July 2000.
  • Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London in 1998.
