Dr. Esfandiari's expertise is in democratic and political developments in the Middle East, Middle Eastern women's issues, and contemporary Iranian intellectual currents and politics. She is the former Deputy Secretary General of the Women's Organization of Iran. She has taught at Oxford University and Princeton University and joined the Wilson Center in 1995.
She is the author of the recently published book, My Prison, My Home, based on her arrest by iranian security authorities in 2007 followed by months of confinement which aroused a storn of international protests.
A native of Iran, she earned a Ph. D. degree from the University of Vienna and is the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation grant.
